Introduction

The Ban Righ Centre has formed over 40 years ago, in an attempt to help mature female students (who were and still are a disadvantaged group within the student population) overcome the barriers that would impede the fulfillment of their education. This initiative stemmed from a group of women students in a time frame when women being able to attend Queen’s was still something new since Queen's was originally accessible only to male students.

The Ban Righ offers, among other services, academic and student advising and financial assistance for mature female students. Also, it offers these students a home-like space within Queen’s,

and a home inside the "Queen’s bubble" is exactly what mature female students usually don't have.

The Ban Righ is an example of the spirit of community outreach that is an integral part of Queen's past, present, and future vision. It serves as an example of what the university and solidarity among women can do for the students as well as for the surrounding community.
